About Me

Welcome to Grow Your Brain, a blog about using the Project Approach instead of theme based learning within a preschool classroom.  My name is Melanie and I am the teacher at a NW Calgary preschool for ages 3-5.  I have been working within preschool settings for over 6 years now and was recently exposed to The Project Approach at Mount Royal University.  It has influenced my philosophy of teaching, how children learn, and my practice in many ways.

I love teaching and working with preschoolers!  They bring so much creativity, life, joy, and individuality into the classroom.  I love seeing their faces light up as they explore a new project and how proud they are when we use an idea that they have contributed.  I enjoy watching their collaboration and communication develop as we work as a class community on a topic of interest.  And I love the loud and animated conversations that erupt when we are exploring something very exciting together.  I love it when the kids ask me a question that I don't know and we need to go on a quest together to discover the answer to that question.

I'm an explorer at heart myself.  Whether it is exploring new areas of Calgary on my road bike, backpacking the Juan de Fuca, or cross country skiing in Kananaskis, I love to go out and discover new things.  I'm thankful for the opportunities to explore new recipes thanks to my fiance and friends.

Come and explore The Project Approach with us!
